About Chateau la Vallette

Enjoy your stay at the exquisite 16th century mini palazzo in the dynamic glorious city of Valletta – “A city built by gentlemen, for gentlemen”, founded by our namesake Grand Master La Valette who laid the foundation stone of Valletta in 1566.

The Order of the Knights of St. John with the assistance of the greatest European architects and engineers at the time, built Valletta as a fine example of modern city planning. Valletta was designed on a grid system which was carefully planned to accommodate water and sanitation and to allow for the circulation of air.

This mini-palazzo is one of the Capital City’s historic homes that has served as a residence for different entities over the years. Built more than 450 years ago, this property boasts unique traditional features and Maltese characteristics which can be highly appreciated by heritage lovers. It was built around a central courtyard like most of the other palaces and auberges of the Knights’ era.

Chateau la Vallette experience of outstanding service and hospitality

Strategically located a few metres away from the Slaves’ Prison (formerly known as ‘Bagni degli Schiavi’ / ‘il-Ħabs il-Kbir’), the palazzo includes an underground cellar which served to hold privately owned slaves by the Knights and noble families. A stone’s throw away from St. Dominic Parish Church founded in 1571 by Grand Master Pietro del Monte (who succeeded Grand Master Jean Parisot La Valette), this property was also home to the Grandmaster’s servants.

Adorned with traditional Maltese flooring, Chateau La Vallette has now been recently restored and converted to host guests who are after a short getaway in the UNESCO World Heritage City. All rooms are finished to the highest of standards, all with private en-suite. One of the rooms on the upper level was used for women to give birth – known as “l-Għorfa” (pronounced as Lorfa). In the 19th and early 20th century, this was usually a room on the upper levels of the house to avoid unusual noise for the other members of the family especially other children. A short stay at Chateau La Vallette promises a unique experience in this historical gem surrounded by bastions and fortifications, located just a few minutes’ walk from all the popular attractions in the prestigious cultural city of Valletta.

Around the corner of Chateau La Vallette, one can find Casa Rocca Piccola – another palace built by Admiral Don Pietro la Rocca (The admiral of the fleet of the Order of Malta) with more than 50 rooms. This palace offers a great attraction to visitors with the largest private collections of antique costumes, traditional Maltese lace and documents dating back to the 16th century including business and marriage contracts, bills, wills, and court cases. Other popular attractions that can be reached in 5 minutes’ walk or less are St. John’s Cathedral, The National Museum of Archaeology, The National War Museum, The Grand Master’s Palace, The Malta Experience, Fort St. Elmo, the Barrakka Gardens, ‘Is-Suq Tal-Belt’, and much more.
